Having to run the gauntlet of a bunch of clowns every morning wasn’t my idea of fun. It’s not that I’m afraid of them, despite what Kathy would have you believe, I simply don’t find them funny.

Still, at least my offices were a clown-free zone.

Spoke too soon.

What the—? I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the clown sitting at Mrs V’s desk.

“What are you doing in here? You should be next door!”

“It’s only me, dear,” the clown said in Mrs V’s voice. “What do you think of my outfit?”

I was too stunned to speak; the only sound that came from my mouth was a series of grunts.

Mrs V, or whatever that ‘thing’ was, continued, “I’ve decided to call myself Knittie. What do you think?”

“I—err—”

“Since Armi was demoted by the Cuckoo Clock Appreciation Society, he’s been looking for a new hobby. I just happened to mention the clown school, and he suggested we should both sign up for it.”

“Armi? I can’t believe he wants to do that.”

“I haven’t seen him so excited about anything in a long time. He’s chosen Jingles as his clown name. Don’t worry, dear, we’ve signed up for the evening classes, so I won’t need to take time off work.”

“Right.”

“I wanted you to see my costume. Be honest, what do you think? Is the red nose too big?”

“It’s—err, I think I heard my phone. I’d better go and answer it.”
